Sergio Ramos appeared to take a dig at former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo by claiming Luka Modric deserved to win the The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award ahead of the ‘more marketable’ Portuguese star.

Ronaldo is competing against Modric and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah to be crowned with the prestigious title.

The 33-year-old left Real Madrid this summer to join Juventus in an £88m deal following a nine-year stay at the Bernabeu, where Ronaldo won 13 trophies and became the club’s top goalscorer. However, it’s clear to see where Ramos’ loyalties lie and he’s suggested Modric is more deserving of the award regardless of Ronaldo’s marketability.

‘There are few players that I am as proud of having in my team as [Modric],’ said Ramos. ‘He is a great friend and a great player. He is one of the few players who [if he wins] would make me as happy as if they had given it to me.’ ‘Maybe there are players with more marketing, with a bigger name but Modric deserves that award,’
